| Bio: | I'm a junior at Wichita State University, majoring in history for my BA and minoring in political science and geology. After that, I'm likely going for either an MA or Ph.D. in History or an MLS/MLIS (Master of Library Science/Library and Information Sciences), or pursusing a law degree. I was a computer science major once upon a time, but after discovering that I am woefully incompetent with higher mathematics, I switched back to my first love and original major from community college, history. Choosing my minors came after taking introductory courses in the subjects, both of which I ended up loving. As may be obvious, I love reading and writing, and in many ways books are my life. Reading may in fact be one of the things I've always enjoyed. According to my mother, I taught myself to read before the age of three. I've never been sure whether to believe that or not, I don't even know if it's possible, but I do know that literacy has been a constant in my life since as far back as I can remember. My parents and my grandmother read to my sister and I constantly when we were little, and we became avid readers ourselves before we hit kindergarten. For me, reading has always provided the ultimate pastime: when much of your early years are spent in hospitals, doctor's offices, laboratories, and home sick from school, and when you aren't a television addict or video game nut (and before most American families owned personal computers), books can be your window to the world outside, to places you'll never be able to visit, to realms of pure imagination. To me there is almost a physical pleasure from picking up a new book you've not read and diving right in. It's a sense of wonder I hope I never lose, and that I wish more children of my generation and that which followed had developed. I currently work as the webmaster for the Kansas Braille Transcription Institute here in Wichita. I've previously been a telemarketer in various incarnations, and a grocery clerk. I'm half Lebanese and half Irish/English/Scotch, Roman Catholic, a slightly left-leaning moderate Libertarian, and an all-around nerdy guy. I consider temperance, moderation, and civility to be the highest of virtues. I believe intellectual and academic pursuits are inherently superior to those physical. I look at the universe both as a profound mystery waiting to be explored in every minute detail by the human mind, and as a divine creation of God that can never be fully fathomed by mortals. I believe that every soul is beautiful and unique, and that every voice is worth hearing. I also tend to get long-winded, especially when I'm on corticosteroids. To sum it all up, in the words of my late friend David Kating, "life is one long, strange journey." | ||
